Making Waves: the Emergence of Atlantis

Background Guide coming soon!

About the Committee

Before now, the Lost City of Atlantis has been just that- lost. As nations above the water have made alliances, traded goods, and waged wars, Atlantis has been secretly growing its power as an underwater city-state. Now, in 2026, Atlantis wants to emerge from secrecy as a global superpower. As a council composed of members of Atlantis's government, you must decide how to do this. Will Atlantis choose to make peaceful contact with the rest of the world? Or will it leverage its hidden might to wage war? You must work together as a council to develop global alliances, communications strategies, and internal defenses to help Atlantis establish itself in the world. Atlantis’s unique technologies and mythical ties to the water will be at your full disposal, but it’s up to you to use these resources while balancing diplomacy with modern nations. The fate of Atlantis is up to you- will Atlantis emerge as a true superpower? Or will it sink back into the waves, lost to mythology?

Meet the Dais

OLIVIA LAPINSKY

Chair

Hi! My name is Olivia Lapinsky (she/her), and I am so excited to be your Chair for the Emergence of Atlantis committee at UCBMUN this year. I am a senior at Berkeley, originally from the Seattle area, studying Political Economy and Public Policy (a very MUN kid combination). I've had the honor of staffing UCBMUN since my freshman year of college, where I've been an ACD, Chief of Staff, and most recently the Director-General of UCBMUN XXIX. For my fourth and final UCBMUN, I'm looking forward to translating the Lost City of Atlantis, a topic I've been obsessed with since I was a kid, to the world of Model UN. Outside of MUN, I'm involved in a student-run policy think tank and the social media team of Berkeley's student newspaper. In my free time, I enjoy trying all of Berkeley's coffee shops, watching murder mystery shows, and obsessing over Taylor Swift. I am so excited to see your creative ideas come to life this weekend- welcome to UCBMUN!

Best,
OLIVIA LAPINSKY

AVA VOLMAN

Crisis Director

Hi everyone! My name is Ava Volman, and I am so excited to be your Crisis Director for the Emergence of Atlantis! I can't wait to see how you choose to navigate this innovative committee.

I am currently a second-year student at Cal studying English as well as Conservation and Resource Studies. I'm originally from Miami, Florida, and I've been competing in MUN since my sophomore year of high school. As much as I love the competitive side of MUN, my favorite part is definitely the people I've been able to bond with along the way.

That being said, I look forward to seeing what crazy, creative direction you choose to take in this committee! With something as mysterious as Atlantis, there are infinite possibilities as to where this weekend might lead. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you and having a fantastic conference!

Best,
AVA VOLMAN
