Violent Delights, Violent Ends: Romeo and Juliet, House of Capulets- JCC
This committee is one half of the JCC.
Background Guide coming soon!
House Capulet, in its quiet and private quest for power, has turned the Prince of Verona from an impartial arbiter of justice to an aggrieved party, perhaps unwisely. You must maneuver yourself out of this situation, or die trying to escape this complex situation. Luckily, indignation is on your side. Romeo, a Montague, has killed a member of your House. This is a political opportunity, and you must not be complacent - you must find desperation, if the Capulet name is to carry on. You must not wallow in your grief; instead, you must be provoked to action and strike against the Montagues, the way they have struck you. Act now or die with regret and dishonor to the Capulet name. Verona’s ruling class is quickly devolving under this infighting. It is a situation whose turmoil leaves much to be gained, but also much to be lost. This conflict is the end of centuries of political stagnation. Night has fallen on society as you know it. How will you remake what is left of an already fragile state? Juliet, the daughter of Lord Capulet, has become a key figure in his political plan to consolidate power. By marrying Paris, a kinsman to the Prince, you may be able to cement House Capulet as the chief House and place the blame for the duel squarely on the shoulders of your rival Montagues. How will you claw back the Capulet name and regain that power? How will you restore what is rightfully yours? How will you undertake the revanchism of your lost political capital? Your path to glory may be forged in sly and deceitful reconciliation, hopeful kindheartedness, or brazen attack on the Montagues. However you make it, you must not let Verona slip from your grasp. This is the twilight of Verona, but it could be the dawn of a new era for the House of Capulet.

SOPHIA MARTINEZ
ChairGreetings, Noble Delegates! My name is Sophia Martinez, and I am enthralled to serve as your chair for JCC: Capulets! As a junior at UC Berkeley studying English and Public Policy, I am beyond excited to combine a club I love with the literature I love! Outside of MUN, I come from Orange County, California. I work as a barista (verrryyy English major of me…!) and explore Berkeley’s cafe and bakery scene (San Francisco also has crazy good options though).
What excites me the most about this committee is what everyone will come up with, as cliche as it may sound. Given the influence and iconic status of Shakespeare, I am thrilled to see how everyone will portray and embody this classic, bringing their storytelling to the table to achieve an exciting conclusion. Whether romance is on your mind, or backstabbing and betrayal, I know that each and every delegate will have a fun and incredibly creative twist. Whether you are well-versed in Shakespeare or just saw the movie with Leonardo DiCaprio in 9th grade, with the iconic nature of this story, I know that whatever happens, it will be as passionate and poetic as the tale of the star-crossed lovers. I eagerly await the discussions and debates you all will devise, and hope that maybe someday we will make peace with the Montagues (or not!). If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

PATRICK BENNETT
Coordinating Crisis Director
Hello hello! My name is Patrick, and I'm a second-year student studying Civil Engineering and Business Administration in the Management, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (M.E.T.) program at UC Berkeley. While my main interest is entrepreneurship, I'm also interested in constitutional and environmental law, education, and cinematography. Outside of school, you can find me running in the Berkeley hills, woodworking in my parents' garage, or at a local art museum. Shakespeare has always been a pet interest of mine, so I'm extraordinarily excited to be your Coordinating Crisis Director for this JCC! In addition to being our 30th edition of this conference, UCBMUN XXX will also be my 30th conference as a delegate or dais member, so I can't wait to share this committee with you all.
Best,

IAN STURAK
Crisis DirectorHi!! My name is Ian Sturak, and I'm beyond excited to be the CD for JCC Capulets this session of UCBMUN! I'm from San Diego, and am currently studying Molecular and Cellular Biology at UC Berkeley! Outside of MUN, I'm an avid runner and can often be found exploring new paths and trails wherever I may be. I also love to bake, cook, and read. I chose this committee because of how much I love literature, tragedy, and history, and because I think those three elements will come together to make a fabulous committee! I can't wait to see what you all bring to the table.
