Relationships Soured: A Bacchic Bankruptcy in Ancient Rome
Background Guide coming soon!
Rome is running out of bread, but drowning in wine. Across the Empire, farmers have traded their grain fields for lucrative vineyards, leaving Rome increasingly dependent on imported food. Emperor Domitian has responded with a brutal solution: ban new vineyards in Italy and destroy half of those in the provinces. The decree, however, has created a crisis of its own. Wealthy landowners are furious, farmers face ruin, and provincial governors are quietly questioning whether Rome’s orders are worth enforcing. Meanwhile, priests of Bacchus warn that destroying the grape is an affront to the gods, and rumors of increasingly strange omens are spreading through the streets of Rome. Delegates will have to decide what matters more: feeding Rome, protecting its wealth, or keeping the gods happy. As the wine runs out and tensions rise, the committee must determine whether Rome’s greatest crisis will be solved through politics, economics, religion…or something far less conventional.
Tanya Anand
ChairMy name is Tanya Anand, and I have the pleasure of serving as your Chair for Baccic Bankruptcy! I’m a junior at UC Berkeley, majoring in Global Management at the Haas School of Business and double majoring in Global Studies with a concentration in Peace and Conflict in the Middle East & North Africa. I’m thrilled to welcome you to what promises to be one of the most dynamic committees at UCBMUN.
I started MUN during my freshman year of high school, and six years later, I’m still hooked. Last year, I chaired the Stark Industries Committee at UCBMUN, which only deepened my love for MUN. I’m especially excited to bring that energy into the committee this year.
Outside of MUN, I love travelling (I grew up in 11 different countries), playing tennis, following Formula 1, and throwing pottery on the wheel. I’m also an avid photographer and music enthusiast(with The Weeknd and Arijit Singh on heavy rotation), and I never say no to a good adventure!
I can’t wait to meet you all and see where you take this committee!
Best,Tanya Anand
