Violent Delights, Violent Ends: Romeo and Juliet, House of Montagues- JCC
[{'type': 'paragraph', 'children': [{'type': 'text', 'raw': 'This committee is one half of the JCC.'}]}]
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, the noble House of Montague stands at a perilous crossroads. The streets run red with the blood of kin as their ancient feud with the influential Capulets grows ever more deadly. Mercutio is slain by Tybalt’s hand, and young Romeo, one of your own, faces the looming threat of exile after avenging his fallen friend. All the while, whispers of duplicitous Capulet plots have spread throughout the city, raising the stakes of this everlasting rivalry higher than ever before.
Yet, in the midst of this tale of violence and vengeance, young Romeo has been ensnared by his heart once more. This time, he's been swept up in a forbidden love affair with Juliet Capulet, his sworn enemy. Against the demands of society, Romeo and Juliet have been wed in secret.
However, their adolescent love has yet to survive the trials and tribulations of their families' enmity. If they successfully traverse conflicting loyalties and the insatiable pride of their families, their union could represent a seed of hope for peace in Verona. One wrong move and this story may become an infamous tragedy.
In their quest to dominate their historic rivals, the Montague family must navigate the treacherous waters of scandal while maintaining their status as one of Verona's most powerful aristocratic families. Friends become enemies and sworn enemies become friends as the two families are swept up in the overwhelming tide of pride, love, politics, and violence. Will this tale of two families end in tragedy? Or will the warring Montague and Capulet families rewrite their scripts?
The Prince's patience is growing thin and the margin for error is slim to none. The game is afoot, the houses of cards are falling, and this noble family has little time to waste. How can you ensure that the Montague name maintains its prestige and triumphs over its enemies? Or would you rather sacrifice success for peace?
Delegates in this star-crossed committee must wield both their swords and their Shakespearean wit in defense of the noble Montague name, or risk plunging the House into further scandal and political ruin. The fates of Romeo, Juliet, and all of 14th century Verona hang in the balance.

I am a junior from Arcata, CA (six hours north of the bay!), majoring in political science and psychology. Joining UCBMUN in my sophomore year was my first experience with Model UN, although I did speech and debate in high school. It has been a wonderful and welcoming community, and a great way to continue honing research, collaboration, and leadership skills. Outside of MUN, I enjoy going to concerts at UC Berkeley's beautiful Greek Theater, traveling, dancing, cooking for my roommates, and reading a LOT. A lifetime love of reading and a transformational high school AP Literature teacher were what inspired me to create this JCC. Majoring in political science and psychology has made me very interested in how a combination of practical reason and strong human emotion can change the course of history. Politics, society, love, pride, and human nature are so strongly related, and I have always seen Romeo and Juliet as a spectacular play that manages to capture all of this. The influence of Shakespeare on literature for over 400 years cannot be understated, and I am delighted for this committee to dive into the wit, passion, and political intrigue that have made Romeo and Juliet so enduring. I am excited to meet all of you and I hope you enjoy UCBMUN XXX!"}]}] Best,

PATRICK BENNETT
Coordinating Crisis Director
Hello hello! My name is Patrick, and I'm a second-year student studying Civil Engineering and Business Administration in the Management, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (M.E.T.) program at UC Berkeley. While my main interest is entrepreneurship, I'm also interested in constitutional and environmental law, education, and cinematography. Outside of school, you can find me running in the Berkeley hills, woodworking in my parents' garage, or at a local art museum. Shakespeare has always been a pet interest of mine, so I'm extraordinarily excited to be your Coordinating Crisis Director for this JCC! In addition to being our 30th edition of this conference, UCBMUN XXX will also be my 30th conference as a delegate or dais member, so I can't wait to share this committee with you all.
Best,
PATRICK BENNETT
