“And Live From The Writer’s Room It’s Saturday Night Live!”: SNL Writers Room
Background Guide coming soon!
It's 6:00 PM on a Saturday, and Studio 8H is chaos. In four hours, millions of viewers will tune in for the weekly program, but tonight's show is falling a'part. A guest host has threatened to walk. A sketch got leaked online and sparked a PR firestorm. The network is breathing down the producers' necks, and somewhere in the building, a writer is having a very public meltdown over a cut joke. And yet, the show must go on. And Live From New York It’s Saturday Night! As Saturday Night Live’s 60th anniversary approaches, Lorne Michaels has mysteriously disappeared without a trace. After co-creating the show in 1975 and leading it for just over 50 years, the direction and future of SNL is left up in the air. This gathering of legendary SNL personnel must guide the future of the show, all while racing to produce each episode before Saturday arrives and seizing every opportunity to step into the spotlight! Delegates must navigate the challenges of SNL’s weekly production, manage fragile celebrity egos, balance comedic instinct with damage control, and respond to breaking news events that threaten to derail the broadcast entirely, all while the clock ticks down to air time. Amidst the chaos of quick changes and last minute rewrites, they must decide which of the world’s many crises to address, what kinds of comedy to pursue, and most importantly, who will lead them there. The show has seen numerous head writers at the helm, each bringing their own style: from Michael O’Donoghue’s edgy, dark comedy, to Tina Fey’s sharp and witty era, to Colin Jost and Michael Che’s slick humor. All of whom lead under the legendary Lorne Michaels. With the shake-up in leadership, not only does SNL need to decide who will lead, but also what kind of comedic identity they’ll take up for the next era. As you convene, the show must also decide how to approach changes to audience preferences. Will SNL hold true to its sketch comedy, or will it need to adapt to the increasingly short attention spans of young adults in 2035? Delegates will need to define not just who leads, but what's actually funny! Will the room chase topical political satire, envelope-pushing absurdism, or crowd-pleasing safe bets? Every choice comes with a cost: writers push for creative risk, the network pushes back, and a joke that kills in the room might die on air — or worse, blow up into tomorrow's headline. As new crises hit, that comedic vision will be tested again and again and again, forcing delegates to defend it or abandon it on the fly. The outcome of your deliberations will decide the future of comedy.
Jongmin Chae
ChairHi! My name is Jongmin Chae, and it is an honor to welcome you to the Bay and UCBMUN XXXI for what will certainly prove to be a thrilling committee. I'm currently a sophomore studying economics and English and joined Model UN my freshman fall. In the non-MUN world, I spend my time prepping for triathlons, am in a consulting club, and am a huge fan of stand-up comedy. I currently serve as Director of Finance for our Model UN club. Having both competed and staffed in college MUN, this committee aims to combine all of the best aspects of MUN, which just so happen to align closely with comedy. Just like the writers' room of SNL, we expect to see fast-paced communication and witty humor come to life to make it on to the final show.
I grew up watching Saturday Night Live and dreaming of being a part of the writers' room; this committee aims to blend the structured diplomacy of the UN with the chaotic creativity of the world's greatest show. SNL and comedy in general are about combining killer preparation with improv, a mentality that Anita and I are excited to see you take on in this committee. We're both excited to see what the kind of comedic timing, negotiating, and humor you all will bring to the weekend!
Best,Jongmin Chae

Anita White
Crisis DirectorHi everyone and welcome to UCBMUN! My name is Anita White and I can’t wait to be your Crisis Director for SNL! I’m a junior here at Cal majoring in Political Science and Ancient Greek and Roman Studies. I grew up in Sacramento, California and I’ve been competing in MUN since I was a high school freshman. This will be my third year in UCBMUN and I’m happy to say that I’ve found MUN to be one of the most welcoming and supportive communities here at UC Berkeley, in addition to being a great way to meet amazing new people on the circuit. Outside of Model UN, I’m an average (slow) runner, a much better skier, a passionate soccer fan (Força Barça!), and avid searcher of IM sports teams to join. I also love reading, exploring the Bay Area and California Coast, museums, and anything history related. I’ve been a huge fan of SNL since I was in Middle School so running an SNL Writers’ Room committee has always been a MUN dream of mine. I’m beyond excited for you all to help me bring this idea to life and LIVE FROM NEW YORK ITS SATURDAY NIGHTTTTTTT!
Best,Anita White
